We finally have a math course on Trillium! I’m so pleased to share that Tammy Oesting has created a new workshop specially for those in-between early childhood years before children are ready to begin working with the Montessori math materials. If you’re a toddler or primary teacher (or parent!) this is for you!
What I hear from almost every teacher fresh out of training and every parent who ever toured my school is how incredible the Montessori math materials are. Just looking at them makes a light bulb go on for most adults, along with a twinge of sadness that they didn’t get to experience math in this way themselves.
So, when a child arrives in the primary classroom, most teachers and parents are eager to have the child jump in and begin working with the materials.
But the thing is, not all children are ready for the Montessori math materials when they enter the primary environment. They actually need a lot more foundational experiences before the materials will make sense.
How do we provide these foundational pre-math experiences? You may know that the practical life and sensorial areas of the Montessori curriculum are designed for this very thing. But how exactly?
What is happening in the child’s brain to prepare them for math? Are you providing the critical experiences needed for developing number sense or are you glossing over them because they seem unimportant on the surface? Are there other activities you can offer that explicitly work on those pre-math skills?
These are the questions that Tammy will cover in her new short course, Building Number Sense.
