“The Mitten” by Jan Brett is such a great book to read with the children in winter. I made up some phonological awareness games for our pre-literacy shelf to go with the book.
Skill: Isolating Words
You will need a basket of blocks to play this game. The teacher reads a sentence card and the child lines up a block for each word he hears. (Source: The Mitten Phonological Awareness Activities)
Skill: Counting Syllables
Say the word (i.e. hedgehog, bear, fox) on the card and clap the syllables. (Source: The Mitten Phonological Awareness Activities)
Skill: Rhyming
Of course, my favorite rhyming activity has to make its way into this pack! Rhyming riddles.(Source: The Mitten Phonological Awareness Activities)
Skill: Isolating Initial Phonemes
I love how these turned out! Match up the mitten pairs that have pictures starting with the same sound.(Source: The Mitten Phonological Awareness Activities)
Skill: Isolating Ending Phonemes
Which One Doesn’t Belong? Two of the pictures on each card have the same ending sound and the third is different. This one is always tricky. I like to do lots of I-Spy games with ending sounds before presenting this to a child. (Source: The Mitten Phonological Awareness Activities)
Skill: Isolating Middle Phonemes
Do the pictures have the same middle sound? (Source: The Mitten Phonological Awareness Activities)
Skill: Segmenting and Blending Phonemes
Point and Slide Cards. Touch a dot as you say each sound in the word, then slide your finger across the arrow as you blend the sounds together and say the whole word. We’re using glass floral beads as an added point of interest. (Source: The Mitten Phonological Awareness Activities)
Skill: Substituting Phonemes
Here the child has to listen to a word and then follow the directions to change one of the sounds in order to make a new word. Distribute the picture cards among a small group of children or line them up at the bottom of the rug. The teacher reads one of the instruction cards and the child identifies the correct picture. Place the picture and instruction card at the top left of the rug. This is one of the most advanced phonological awareness activities. (Source: The Mitten Phonological Awareness Activities)
